Usman Ahmodu Mohammed

Usman Ahmadu Mohammed; Professor in the Department of Language, Nigerian Defence Academy was born on the 11th of April 1957 in Hausari in Maiduguri Borno State of Nigeria in the family of Alhaji Ahmadu Mohammed and Hajiya Aishatu Mohammed.
 
 

Education

The Educational pursuits of Prof UA Mohammed began with a Baccalaureate(A Level equivalent) which ushered him into a vast terrain of knowledge i.e. the University of Maiduguri where Prof UA Mohammed bagged a First Class Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics and French in 1990, a Master degree in General Linguistics in 1995 and a PhD in General Linguistics in 2004 at the University of Maiduguri in Borno state of Nigeria where he started his career as a Graduate Assistant in 1990. He transferred his services to the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna in 1998.

Prof UA Mohammed’s Professional affiliations are:The University French Teachers Association of Nigeria (UFTAN) whose role is to bring together professional teachers of French in Nigeria, the Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN) which is also a professional academic body that brings together Linguists from all over Nigerian for annual conference on Linguistics and related themes, the Northern French Conference (NOFCON) which is the Northern version. The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) (NIM) brings professionals annually for training in Administration. Prof UA Mohammed is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (mnim), Fellow of the Commonwealth Academy Education (FCA Education) and Senior Fellow of the International Association of Research Scholars and Administrators (SFIARSA) and Council Member of the International Association of Research Scholars and Administrators (SFIARSA) and Fellow African Academic Network (FAAN).
 
 

Career

Prof UA Mohammed started his career as an Academic with the University of Maiduguri in the Department of Languages and Linguistics as an office Attendant from 1980 to 1981 then joined the teaching profession as a Secondary School Teacher from 1984 to 1987. Prof UA Mohammed joined the academia as Graduate Assistant at University of Maiduguri. Maiduguri after the completion of a B.A. Linguistics and French with First Class Degree in 1990 then he was promoted to the rank of Lecturer II in 1998.Prof UA Mohammed transferred his services to Nigerian Defence Academy in 1998 where he grew from Lecturer II to a full Professor in Linguistics and French in 2013.Prof UA Mohammed was appointed Head of the Department of Languages from 2008 to 2011. Apart from the regular teachings in the Nigerian Defence, Prof UA Mohammed took Visiting Lecturership appointments in various Nigerian Universities. Among these Universities are: Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU-Zaria) in Kaduna State, Bayero University Kano (BUK) in Kano State, Danfodiyo University Sokoto in Sokoto State, Kaduna State University (KASU) in Kaduna State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai in Niger State etc. In all these institutions, Prof UA Mohammed taught various graduate and postgraduate courses in addition to supervisions of undergraduates’ projects and Postgraduates’ Dissertations. Prof UA Mohammed is presently External Examiner in the Department of English Literary Studies in BUK and the Department of Languages and Linguistics University of Maiduguri in Borno State and Umaru ‘Yar’aduwa University Katsina Katsina State.Prof UA Mohammed was involved in a Committee saddled with the upgrade of the Nigerian Army Institute of Technology and Environmental Sciences(NAITES) into a University and also member of its Implementation Committee. NAITES became Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) whereby Prof UA Mohammed became the pioneer Acting Vice Chancellor and Acting Academy Provost at Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna in February 2020.
 
 

Research

Prof UA Mohammed authored articles in reputable national and international academic journals. Prof UA Mohammed authored a book of reference to Linguists and students of Linguistics titled:“General Linguistics: Generative and Sociolinguistic Approaches” whose second edition is forthcoming. In his early publications, he focused on Contrastive Linguistic analyses of various Nigerian and European languages while in the recent years his research focus is tilted to: Language Policy, Planning and Management.
