Owiwi Battle

Owiwi Battle was an historical military engagement of the Egba and Ijebu resulting in the defeat of the latter. The battle of Owiwi emanated from the rancor between the newly settled Egba people of Abeokuta and the people of Ijebu Remo. Ijebu villages gathered immediately after the withdrawal of Egba victorious army to avenge their sister village thereby leading to the battle of 1833 near the Owiwi River in which Ijebu was conquered with the help of Adele Ajosun of Lagos who bought firearms for the Egba army and the Ajano of Ota who protected war tools in transit through his territory, from looters.

It is said that some Egba men and women committed suicide on hearing about the initial impediment of their army in Koboro during this battle.
