Minimalism is not enough

There was a time when people covet clutter – make no mistake they still do but minimalism, which is the application of the slimmest possible adornment or utility in a living space, has become popular. With its focus on simplicity and purity, minimalism has somewhat become associated with class. Expectedly it has become the preferred choice of even those who don’t truly understand it. I will here state what minimalism truly seek to achieve for the minimalist and why it shouldn’t be the goal of all personality types. I will here argue that class can be showcased with several styles and ultimately explain why telling your story should be the focus while choosing the style for your space.

What is minimalism in Home Decor?

Short answer. Minimalism in home decoration is the use of simple shapes, colours, patterns and style in the arrangement of your home. The need to let your space breathe is stemmed from similar aspiration to decluttering. For some persons, there is a need to keep a space that is both airy and easy on the eyes. This enhances focus, clarity, simplicity, and even spirituality. Usually, the minimalist’s style tends to be beautiful and elegant. It tends to showcase freedom and modernity. It must be noted however that you do not have to go minimalist to be all of these things. Some people go for the more cluttered style yet remain modern and classy. Minimalism is a choice that should come with the knowledge of what it presupposes, and should not be attempted with affectation.

It’s been long since anyone spoke in favour of maximalism. Allow me the honours. The bold, colourful, warm, and richly expressive aesthetics of some homes produce a feeling that could be as rewarding as the minimalist style. For some, the feeling of being in the cluttered warm home that reminds them of what home used to be trumps any decluttering motives that they might have. Maximalism is not synonymous with disorder. Sometimes there are stories that need to be told with the home décor that minimalism simply cannot afford.

In all of these, you will notice, one factor remains the denominator: the need to be you and to tell your story, or the need to aspire at who you want to be as well as communicate this to people who comes into your space. The end goal is to feel whatever the way you want yourself, family or anyone who comes into your space to feel.
