Deciding what to wear for your occasion can be exciting but once it gets to the point of purchase not so exhilarating anymore. Factors from the formality of the event to the season it is holding, and desired look and feel complicates the choice that you may have had originally. Style must be balanced with comfort, and for some, maintenance. Colors and patterns play a major role in your decisions, as well as even more detailed features such as the drape. Overall, you don’t want to keep too many fabrics that require dry cleaning like Silk and Velvet if you are on a budget or just want to keep a small wardrobe. Cotton and linen are easier to care for at home.

 

Formality of Event

 

Though many sleepwalk into the notion that every fabric made into native design is informal, there are indeed dresses which suits official occasions. To decide on the formality of your coming event, consider if it is one with the purpose of making business, or networking for same intention, or if it is pure fun event. Sometimes, the person of the celebrant determines the formality of their event from the perspective of the invitee. For example, a subordinate in the party of a boss in which he is among the planners may be considered somewhat formal. A cocktail, dinner party, or a home birthday party has varying level of formality. You’d know how to dress form the band that is coming to sing. You can tell what the invitee has in mind if Asa is singing, Johnny Legend, or if Osupa Saheed will be serenading celebrants to the floor.  Luxury such as silk, velvet, or satin works if it is formal and cotton, linen, or synthethic blends is just fine for casual.

 

 

Season

 

Everyone who prepares have a picture in mind how they want to look to the next event but deciding which fabric is appropriate for the season shows your practicality. A thick breathless dress may even be considered bad sense if it is a hot season in a stuffy face. You never can tell if the Air Conditioning will be under maintenance, and you don’t want to be sweating or looking uncomfortable in your dress. If its rainy and event is outdoors you don’t want your fabric to be one which looks funny when drained, Lighter fabrics such as chiffon and linen goes well for warm weather, heavier ones like velvet and wool is best for cool climate.

Desired Look & Feel

 

If truly you are out there for the celebrant you must consider their taste. Little effort will fit a minimalist just as some extra effort will make the flamboyant one happy. Your style usually is your personality and you may have been invited with the expectation to bring a bit of it. Silk and Satin can evoke a sense of luxury and elegance while linen and cotton offer more relaxed natural look. Chiffon and georgette drape elegantly as well. You should let the duration of the event determine whether to sacrifice comfort, if you want to do so at all. Some experimentation that requires bravery in you might work if it is for a couple of hours but you don’t want to be that fish out of water the whole day. Soft breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are more comfortable for all-day wear.

 

Colour

 

Whether your colour will be classic white or black or the celebratory bold colour and patterns should be influenced by the theme of the event. In Nigeria colours are usually dictated by the celebrant but when this is not the case you may want to help your gut feeling with the good old colour theory. If a favoured colour feels extreme you may consider other shades of it. Usually, colours that are far apart in the colour wheels are complementary. They are so called because they contrast beautifully. Sometimes you may not feel like showcasing this boldly , hence go for colours which are closer together.
